Try a portrait feed layout and there is no room left for the headline. A photo crop brief for banners helps you discuss these problems before the shoot, rather than relying on a request for “a large image”.

Cropping removes part of an image to change its frame or composition. A large file offers room to work, but it does not automatically provide empty background where your design needs it. One photograph may serve several layouts; alternatively, you may need separate compositions. The useful agreement covers what can be removed, which details must remain visible, and where the promotional message will sit.

Daftar Isi

Collect destination layouts, not just file sizes

Mark the product, label and copy space

Compare wide and portrait crops

Decide when a separate composition is needed

Collect destination layouts, not just file sizes

Start with the intended placements: a website banner, a portrait post, or a square promotional graphic. Include a sketch showing the photograph, headline, button and your brand logo. If the final design is not ready, simple boxes with notes about their purpose are enough to begin the conversation. The photographer needs to understand how the product relates to the design, rather than guess from a channel name.

Separate aspect ratio from pixel dimensions. Aspect ratio describes the relationship between width and height; pixel dimensions give the number of pixels along each side. Adobe’s Photoshop Crop tool documentation distinguishes ratio choices from width, height and resolution settings. Selecting a new ratio does not by itself guarantee sufficient detail at your intended display size.

Record each placement separately. For example, a sample banner could put the product on the right and the headline on the left, while a portrait design puts its headline above the product. These are illustrative design choices, not official dimensions for every platform. Ask your designer to check the requirements of the actual destination, including how the layout changes on a phone.

Mark the product, label and copy space

Annotations on an AI illustration: example regions, not platform safe areas.

On the sketch, mark what must remain intact: the lid, packaging edges, label, or an accessory included in the sale. Distinguish those areas from expendable background. Instead of simply saying “do not crop the product”, explain whether the entire package must appear in every layout or whether a closer detail view is acceptable for a particular use.

Copy space is an area intentionally reserved for design text. An empty area may still be difficult to use if it contains strong shadows, reflections or uneven brightness. Show the approximate headline length and button position so the space can be planned. You do not need to finalize every word immediately, but avoid replacing an approved short line with a long paragraph after the composition has been agreed.

Adobe recommends discussing required angles and label visibility before a session in its product photography guide. Turn that principle into specific instructions for your brief: “keep the product name readable”, “retain the right-hand edge”, or “the headline must not cover the lid”. These notes are easier to review than a general request for an attractive photograph.

Compare wide and portrait crops

Two crops of one AI illustration; the portrait crop reduces left-hand space.

Try both frames using one sample image. Place each result in its design sketch rather than comparing photographs without text. First check whether the product remains intact, then whether the label is visible enough at display size, and finally whether the headline and button fit. Do not approve a version solely because it looks good enlarged on a work monitor.

The visual example here uses actual crops of a single fictional product illustration. In the portrait crop centered on the products, some of the empty space on the left disappears. That is not automatically a fault: this version may work well when the product takes priority, but not when the headline still needs to sit on the left. Moving a crop changes what remains; it does not create new space.

Keep a source file you have permission to use and separate the exports for each layout. In Photoshop, Delete Cropped Pixels controls whether areas outside the crop are permanently removed or remain editable when the option is off. Ask which settings and file types are part of your agreement with the provider. Do not assume every delivered file includes hidden image areas or editable working layers.

Decide when a separate composition is needed

Original infographic for agreeing on crop requirements.

Choose separate compositions when the requirements conflict. A banner might need two products side by side with a generous headline area, while a portrait graphic needs one large product with its label facing forward. Forcing both into one frame can sacrifice the information you want to preserve. Explain the priority of each version before the session so additional requirements can be discussed rather than assumed to be included.

If you already have a photograph, send an original you are authorized to edit along with the destination sketch to an online photo editing service. Ask whether a crop is sufficient, whether a background adjustment is feasible, or whether reshooting is more appropriate. Expanding a background does not authorize invented packaging shapes, label text or missing product details. Agree on the limits and review the result in the actual layout.

When planning product photography with Shaniba Creative Industry (Indonesian service page), bring your placement list, copy-space sketches and protected-detail notes. Use your consultation with SCI to discuss the main composition and any additional versions. A useful brief is not the longest one: it makes clear to everyone what may change and what must remain.

Agree on copy space, protected product details and separate compositions before shooting for banners and feeds.

[2

post-14778","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
