A request for “high-resolution images” leaves too much open to interpretation. Useful photo files for web and print are files prepared for their destination, not simply the largest files someone can send.

Start by explaining who will use the photographs, where they will appear, and what the receiving team requires. Then agree on the versions you need. This gives your photographer or editor a practical brief and helps your own team identify which files are ready for which purpose.

Daftar Isi

Photo files for web and print: start with the destination

Keep pixel dimensions, PPI, and file size separate

Agree on color profiles and a clearly labeled delivery

Photo files for web and print: start with the destination

Original guide diagram; specifications depend on the destination and recipient.

List the actual placements before choosing a format. A product detail page, website banner, and printed catalog may use the same selected photograph, but they may need different compositions. Ask the website team and designer to specify the image area, orientation, and space needed for text. A crop that works in a product card should not automatically become the catalog cover.

Consider a hypothetical brand preparing packaging photographs for a product page and a brochure. The website needs the complete pack visible; the brochure designer wants clear space beside it for copy. A useful request describes these placements and the agreed crop boundaries rather than asking for “two good files.”

For the website: ask the person managing the site for pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, accepted formats, and upload file-size limits.

For print: ask the designer or printer for the final reproduction size, crop or bleed requirements, requested resolution, file format, and color-profile instructions.

For later use: mention any known plans and ask which final-image archive version is available within the agreed scope.

Let those requirements guide the format. Adobe gives JPEG for online sharing and TIFF for print publication as examples, not a universal rule that every website must use JPEG or every printer must receive TIFF.[2] Pass the recipient’s specifications to the photography provider before final delivery. If the website requirements are not available yet, keep them as an open question rather than filling in assumptions.

When discussing a project with Shaniba Creative Industry, bring this destination list into the initial conversation. Distinguish the number of selected photographs from the number of versions you want. Ask whether additional crops or output versions are included in the agreement instead of assuming that every variation comes with the photographs.

Keep pixel dimensions, PPI, and file size separate

Original guide diagram; specifications depend on the destination and recipient.

“Image size” can mean several things. Pixel dimensions describe the image’s width and height in pixels. PPI, or pixels per inch, describes the number of pixels per inch for print.[3] File size, expressed in KB or MB, describes the amount of stored or transferred data. Record these separately so everyone knows which requirement you mean.

For a website, ask for the required pixel width and height alongside the file-size limit. For print, obtain the physical reproduction size and requested PPI from the production team. Labels such as “high resolution” and “print ready” are not a substitute for specifications that can be checked against the job.

A PPI value is not a switch that automatically adds photographic detail. Adobe distinguishes resolution settings from resampling, which adds or removes pixels.[3] Make sure the conversation covers the actual pixel dimensions rather than just the resolution number shown in the file information. If the photograph will be cropped, request the dimensions of the cropped version, not only those of the uncropped image.

Megabytes alone cannot establish whether a photograph is suitable. Adobe explains that JPEG uses lossy compression, discarding data to make a smaller file, and provides a file-size limit separately from image-sizing controls.[6] Do not approve or reject a delivery simply because its files look large or small. Check the pictures, their dimensions, and their intended use together.

For print, avoid treating a single PPI number as mandatory for every job. Adobe directs users to check offset or lab-print requirements with their service provider.[6] If you have not chosen a printer, record the print specification as provisional. That is more useful than describing an unchecked image as suitable for every print size.

Agree on color profiles and a clearly labeled delivery

Original guide diagram; specifications depend on the destination and recipient.

Color profiles help a color-management system reconcile differences between devices.[1] Adobe gives sRGB as an option for sharing photographs online and describes custom device profiles for printing.[1] Ask which profile is used for each version, then compare it with the recipient’s requirements.

Do not automatically request an RGB-to-CMYK conversion just because the final destination is print. Ask the printer which profile and format they require and who should handle the conversion. Put that answer into the brief. Where packaging color is important, also ask about proofing or a sample print and its conditions before approving production.

Next, separate the website versions, the versions prepared for the agreed print use, and any available final-image archive. Choose filenames that identify the product, view, destination, and revision. This is a suggested organizational approach, not a naming standard every supplier must follow.

Contents: list the selected photographs and promised versions for each destination.

Specifications: record pixel dimensions, crop, format, and profile, plus print size and PPI where relevant.

Status: distinguish previews and approval copies from final files cleared for use.

Access: agree on downloading, link availability, and responsibility for keeping archive copies.

Scope: confirm usage rights, additional versions, and any source files explicitly included in the agreement.

A final-image archive is not the same thing as camera RAW files, working masters, or layered editing documents. Raise those needs separately and ask whether they are available; none should be assumed to be included with a photo delivery. Keep the specification notes as well, so a future team can understand what each version was prepared for.

When the delivery arrives, compare the filenames and contents with your list. Open the intended versions and check the crop, product-label legibility, and stated specifications. If something does not match, identify the filename and affected placement. To discuss your requirements with SCI, bring your placement list and the website or printer specifications to the Shaniba Creative Industry contact portal.[5] Concrete requirements make the scope easier to discuss.

Sources: [1] Adobe; [2] Adobe; [3] Adobe; [5] SCI; [6] Adobe.

Request photo deliveries for their website and print destinations.
